Personal Statement

Chemistry is a subject I have always considered exciting - ever since I was young and the house would
be stacked with copies of New Scientist, my thirst for knowledge in this field has been strong. The issues
and problems the journal covers fascinate me and I feel that solving huge dilemnas in this branch of science
is the only thing that could satisfy me as a person and an academic. A question from a generic textbook
sums my point perfectly - is it possible for you to name something that isn involved with the chemical
industry? I have thought about it for 6 months and still have no answer.

The courses I am doing have definitely paved the way for a future in science - maths, biology and chemistry to
A2 level and History to AS. After completing my first year with my three main subjects I feel there is room for
more work and after achieving an A* at it for GCSE, history is an ideal way to complete 4 AS levels. However
it is my science that interests me the most, and a very interesting and extensive guide of the Eli Lilly complex in
Windlesham has shown me exactly what to expect from a big laboratory. All of the chemists I saw were obviously
delighted with their profession and the buzz of a functioning work place was obvious even to an outsider - I could not
imagine a more fufilling job! The chemistry we study for A level has taught me how to perform several different forms
of chemical analysis in a practical way, as well as introducing and confirming several principals needed to progress
in the subject. The biology I study links well with chemistry because of the close involvement chemistry has with
several different life processes - especially the reaction of specific molecules with enzymes, cell surface membranes,
and the general effect on the actual organism itself - all things I want to study in more depth. The maths ties alot of
it together - for example it is only with extensive statistical knowledge can one fully analyse the recorded results of
an experiment and my maths proves invaluable in this and many other cases.

My A level course in chemistry has above all inspired me to ask more questions, demand more answers and most
importantly, perservere. It is only with real dedication can one achieve in this subject and its vastness does not dissuade
me as it does others. On the contrary I feel there will always be problems that need solving and with my potential and desire I
feel it is my duty to provide modern scientific research with my service - to get to this point it is vital I study Chemistry
at degree level. During Year 10 I participated in a forensic science activity course at the Royal Holloway University, a 3
day long scientific investigation into a fictional murder case. It is here I experienced university lodgings, scientific research
and how to work as a team with new people - all things that have contributed to my thirst for degree level Chemistry. My job
during this course was to study soil samples extensively and compare it with various other bits of data to form conclusions.
This is not Chemistry strictly speaking, but it taught me the art of patience with research - it was only with about 10 hours of
solid microscope work did we manage to piece together the events in the case. I think it has shown me that even though the
short term prospects of some research may be repetitive and arduous, perseverance and dedication is important and being
able to apply myself to this type of practical makes me think I am capable of dealing with similar situations in real chemical
research.
