Large Hadron Collider

Posted by uksUnToUcH on the 9th of September 2008 at 4:05 AM

..experiment tommorrow!

Ment to re-create the very moment of the big bang, and learn stuff about dark matter.

The switch is ment to be pulled 10th september!

Could create black wholes, but they will disapear apparently!

thoughts...?

Mini black holes will be created almost constantly but they'll decay via Hawking radiation within a few nano-seconds. They're not going to get out of hand and swallow the Earth or anything silly like that. It is still nowhere near the beginning of the big bang - we're down to within a few hundredths of a second, but we can't generate enough power to recreate the Big Bang. Interesting stuff though!

the result would've been the same if they got the entire population of china to run in an entire circle very fast and then collide with each other

yeah vanjo, thats also called the ancient chinese method of "breeding". No but on a serious note this could be it! the end of the world Confused better get ur last dose of cs in quick!!!

takes a few month to power up so they can use it, also will take a year before any kind of result is made.

Lol, don't be silly nothing near the end of the world is going to happen.
Think it's fantastic and will open up so many more questions but answer so many as well.

They're going to collide protons together at speeds of about 300,000Kps (EDITED THIS HAD KPH, its now KPS in case people think im chatting shiteSad), close to the speed of light, the reason they need to do this is because a proton is surrounded by a strong nuclear force, a force about 1000 trillion trillion trillion times stronger than gravity, so as you can see they need something pretty special to open up that proton Grin
When they collide they will create a heat of about 100,000 times that of the sun.
Hopefully recreating the hadron era, when nothing but quarks could have existed, basically they are going to take a snap shot with a computer capable of processing a billion phone calls a second right after the collision (a millionth to a about 10 thousands of a second)
Well they are doing all this because they're looking to find out why matter and anti-matter were created and only one survived, they are doing it to find out what dark matter is, BUT the MAIN reason they are doing it is to see if Higgs really does exist, basically higgs particles is there theroy for mass in the universe today but they can't prove it, either way if higgs isin't found they will still find out what mass is and thus be able to take the theory of relativity further. Also slight chance of finding other dimensions, Grin all exciting really and i can't wait for it to happen.

if SOMETHING which it won't goes wrong we wont even notice the world will be gone in a blink of an eye and i can't think of a better way to go tbh. all at once and not knowwing, so no-one to tell the tale, death being irrelevant.

Lol atlantis what you on about making things up, everything i said there was 100% FACT! Sad

Source "http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/en/LHC/Facts-en.html"
quote: The LHC is a machine of extreme hot and cold. When two beams of protons collide, they will generate temperatures more than 100 000 times hotter than the heart of the Sun, concentrated within a minuscule space. By contrast, the 'cryogenic distribution system', which circulates superfluid helium around the accelerator ring, keeps the LHC at a super cool temperature of -271.3C (1.9 K) %u2013 even colder than outer space!

Anyway, happy reading. Just don't jump down people's throats in future without having an iota of what you're talking about

I'd have thought anyone could see it was copying/pasting hence the source/qoute thrown in there,. sticking in a reputable source to back up what i said is wrong?
They're propelling the protons at 99.99% the speed of light
And isin't the speed of light in an empty space roughly 300,000kps so where was I wrong ?

30

what i think sunzz is trying to squirm his way into is that he tried to say "300 000 km per second", i dont know what "kps" is, as ive never seen a unit look like that. i dont know anyone that measures the speed of light in "km p s" either.. but it appears sunzz does, 3 x 10^8 metres per second is what everyone i know uses..

just to clear things up

I dont know how to explain this in English but anyway here's a try

This detector could be next big thing after Einstein's famous E=mC^2
After the proton gets launched it will reach its maximum speed, which results that all its energy (E), will be converted to mass (M) with the factor of C^2 which is simply just BRILLIANT.
you britfags have to keep note that getting the protons 'heavier' requires alot of energy, simply because: increasing mass = energy / C^2. C^2 (note: C = 3*10^16)

btw this thing is 100% safe

57

Link to CommentPosted by ukmbk from clanless on Sep 11, 16:28.

why is E=mc^2 "infamous" what has it done wrong?

also, the c is supposed to be lowercase, but ill let that slide because uve said that C= 3*10^16 when it doesnt.. its 3*10^8, scroll up for previous banter over the speed of light.

also, from my understanding of the equation energy will be converted to mass with the factor 1/c², not c² - huge difference, basically rearranging to make m the subject, m=E/c², not E/c²c²

also, nothing is 100% safe, its just very safe

*take note im dutch so my english isnt as fancy as yours, cant really translate every word without looking it up Tongue*
typo typo typo corrected

I dropped out of my old uni mbk, I do econometrics now.. but let me correct myself

c = 299.792.458 m/s! * 299.792.458 m/s ~ 3*10^16 (3 with 16 zero's)
I'm going to ask my friend later who still does my old education if he knows any more Smile

and about the equation,
when the cell nucleus splits in half it goes the other way around: when mass (m) gets halved * c^2 answer = lots and lots of energy .. now reverse that and you get?

but I think you are right on the equation part anyway I'll have to ask that aswell
