Dell PC problem

Posted by ukPATTT on the 8th of September 2008 at 9:11 PM

So i spilt water in my old pc so i thought after a few years it was time to upgrade and buy a new computer.

Ended up buying a Dell Inspiron 530 and shortly after purchasing, setting up a few things etc i found out the internet hardly works. When i say hardly i mean.. i can literally check google, bbc sport if im lucky but stuff like Facebook etc just will not load.. or if it does, it loads SO slowly, at times it can run perfectly for like 1minute and then completely dies after and says my internet is only 'local' when it should be 'local & internet'

what i've tried:
- been through google, looked for solutions had no luck.
- doing all windows updates
- rolling back to when i first got the computer
- firewall off
- uninstalling any virus software etc
- using a different usb dongle
- cant remember other things atm

basically, the network is fine and works perfectly on the laptop i am using at the moment (which is xp pro) .. the network worked fine on my old XP computer but since i've updated to vista, its all gone tits up.

hopefully somewhere out there know's something i don't and can help me out.

sweet x

hmmm i used to get a problem with vista when i let the comp go into sleep mode or whatever it does automatically if u dont do anythign for an hour or whatever - everytime it woke up again my internet had gone to local only until i reset the cmos.

possibly something similar? turn off all the features which put ur comp to sleep after innactivity.

other than that, i have to agree vista is shite, ive gone back to XP cus i got fed up of half my programmes just not working.

if you can access some sites and not others it might be the DNS your ISP is assigning to you.

Try using openDNS.

Click Start > Control Panel > Switch 2 Classic View > Network & Sharing Center >
Manage Network Connections (On the left under Tasks) > Right Click your Local Area Connection

> Select Properties > Click Internet Protocol Version 4 then Properties > Select Use the Following DNS Server Addresses > Then Enter 208.67.222.222 and for the alternate server 208.67.220.220

GL!

I had a problem abit like this before.

turned out to be the onboard network card was awful, would randomly die and id have to reboot to get working, only for it to stop working 10 mins later again.

I bought a £10 network card from Maplin and disabled the onboard = fixed

Whats your PSU? Might be struggling.

Device manager > Network adapter, right click on your ne con card > properties > Power management > UNTICK allow comp to turn this device off when low on power

thats for XP mind. no idea how to do that on vista
