Hey,
A quick question for everyone on here in relation to a number of stories in the press recently. I was wondering who on here is currently studing a games development course or is planning to in the future? This can be games development, games art, games programming, design, web development or computer science courses or any other courses that relate to it.
There is a big thing at the moment about courses not being suitable to give graduates jobs in those areas and I wanted to gauge which University courses seem to be popular so if you can include which Uni you are at as well that would be great.
Thanks in advance.

someone who i play WOW with works for a games company making a war type game at the moment which will come out on ps3, ill get his msn for you.
i thought part of the point was like 75% of these games developement uni courses arent even accredited
They arent "SkillSet" accredited, any university can create a games development course as there is no guideline they have to work to which is half the problem, they dont teach students the latest tools or techniques because Universities tend to be a few years behind industry.
Computer Games Programming, University of Huddersfield.
making ig6 byoc is the biggest mistake you'll make protex
im doing a Bsc webdesign course
hows your cock for spots phillip?
try asking MaJ, he's at huddersfield doing games design I think, also give wute a shout, he's in ipswich doing something relative to games, sorry I forgot what it was loz =[
Games enterprise course at Pompey, probly failing mind
Derby Uni has a great games course
basic obv so u do sprites/2d games
but theres also like 3D Modelling etc
some of the students making some proper cool shit
u do XnA for xbox as well like, but again, from what ive seen its just 2D altho i think in the 2nd year u look at 3D work, not sure
but the development suites are sick
dual screens etc

Derby Uni and games development - NO.
And yes I did go to Derby Uni.
hi phil
heard good things about computer games programming at Huddersfield.
It is rather fantastic ;=)
Games Software Development at sheffield hallam
Just finished my first year, was abit slow paced for my liking (I had done alot of first year stuff at a-level) I have learnt good fundamentals for creating games not just gimmicky stuff. Have had talks from people from Sony and Team 17.
Course also has a year in industry but placements arent actually with games companies (They won't take anyone). Also has a masters degree for your 5th year doing projects WITH sony. I had a good research into which courses were the best and sheffield was the best compromise between distance from home and quality. Some of the best courses are in scotland and ireland which was just too far for me.
Computer Science or Multimedia Technology at Uni of Kent is where its at ;p
what do you actually learn? C bullshit?
Some good responses here thanks. For those that are doing games related courses or are looking at doing them I have created something that might help develop your portfolios.
www.studentdevelopers.co.uk
Aiming to be a place where students can collaborate on projects, get new ideas and get some experience outside of their Uni courses. In the long run will be hoping to provide access to development tool kits, tutorials from people in the industry.
I would appreciate it if you would have a look, signup and get your course mates involved because the more students we have on board the easily it will be to get industry involved and providing you with extra bits and pieces.
I think the lack of females in the course may hinder your overall experience.
so protex actually made this column to just advertise his wordpress website
epic fail
so true
very sly
Met the course director for Games Development and Artificial Intelligence at University of Wales, Newport while working at XLEAGUE, he knows his stuff, and has created a lot of indsutry links by working with XLEAGUE etc.
So if anyone is interested, check that out.
I'll sign up to the site, I dont do game development, but Im a sound design student in my final year and wanting to head into game sound, so any oppurtunties, let me know ;D
Protex never misses a trick does he?
It's hardly for his own benefit when the site is to help others....... I'll spread the word to the game students at pompey can see it being helpful!
Ive been a student, i did computer graphics for 2 years at uni before failing miserably at it an changing course so i know how hard it can be. This is just a way of me trying to give back to students who are going through things now and in the future because I know how hard it can be to get a job in the industry.
im going to be doing computer science games technology at city london uni.
do computer science, these poxy courses mean shit
doing computer games design at Huddersfield Uni . It's a good course compared to some of the other uni's, they teach you 3ds max, coding with havok engine, modding, and some reviewing work . Need to start making a portfolio of all my work ¬_¬
hope the site takes off
Go to a good uni do computer science and learn AI, that is all you need
