February News Summary

Posted by ukenuex on the 4th of February 2004 at 1:45 PM in Gaming News    0 Comments

Just a small collection of brief news pieces that have appeared over the past few days.

  • Gamer and writer Donna Antonijevic is writing a 2-piece article on female gaming. The first part has been posted on GotFrag and can be found here. The concluding part should be completed within the next week or 2, and if it equals this then it should prove a good read.

  • American news giant CNN is reporting that Half-Life 2 is now officially set for a release in the coming months, with VALVe employee Doug Lombardi claiming that they are "targeting this summer for the completion of Half-Life 2". With their track record, especially regarding HL and CS, you can safely predict what major game you'll be spending your cash on this summer, right? Read more here.

  • The "Federal Mercenary Clan" (US) has made a "Half-Life Tool Pack". The pack is some 39mb big and contains many HL and CS programs, tweakers, and launchers - especially in regards to graphics it seems. Their description?

"Half-Life Tool Pack contains over 50 of some of the best and most useful applications available for Half-Life (and its MODs). It includes everything from mapping/modeling tools to launchers - all in one convenient, easy to manage package."

For the full list of programs included, and for a download mirror, look no further.

  • The American based GamesNet IRC network is being discontinued. Instead, the network is merging with Pro Game Players Network to form a new network: GameSurge.

    CS:CZ - Hands On

Posted by ukenuex on the 5th of February 2004 at 3:18 PM in Gaming News    0 Comments

After having some time to enjoy their official pre-release (almost final) build of Counter Strike: Condition Zero, Planet Half-Life have, in the early hours of this morning (UK time), written a "Hands On" evaluation of the game. The article covers the history, hype, and build-up of the game before going into it's features and their opinions on it, making overall quite a solid read. The arguably most important aspect of the game, however, and the part that possible applies most all us CS fans out there, is covered in good detail, as the extract below demonstrates:

"Now, the big question: is the bot AI any good? In a word, yes. There's no way AI can compare to actual human players, but CS: CZ's bots are about as good as you could hope for. Bots switch up their tactics, take different routes constantly, camp, scream "OWNED!", and react to sound appropriately. And your bot teammates actually have a little bit of personality: Maverick, for example, has high skill and bravery attributes, but a bad co-op rating."

In this respect, CZ does look quite useful - check the article out here for more.
